Women's Cord Trousers From Tribal, and the Autumn Knits to Wear With Them
Women's cord trousers from Tribal come in three versions this autumn: the Audrey slim leg in saddle brown or black, and the Stellar wide leg in cobalt. All three are full length, with prices from £79 to £105.
The Audrey pulls on at the waist, while the Stellar sits higher and fastens with a button. Around them, the Tribal delivery adds two smooth slim leg trousers, five jumpers, two cardigans, a faux leather jacket and a denim waistcoat.

Women's cord trousers in two shapes
The Audrey borrows its details from a five-pocket jean: scoop front pockets, a small coin pocket and patch pockets on the back. Its waistband simply pulls on. It is made in a fine-wale cord with a soft sheen, and the leg runs slim and straight to a full-length hem.
Saddle brown is a deep chocolate shade. The black is a deep, even black that works with cream, camel or grey.
Stellar is a different trouser altogether. It rises to a high waist with belt loops and a button, then falls wide and straight to the floor without flaring. The cord has a velvety sheen, and the cobalt is a strong, clear blue.

The pull-on staple trouser
Tribal's staple trouser swaps cord for a smooth, flat fabric. A flat pull-on waistband takes the place of a zip and button, and the slim leg narrows towards the ankle.
It is cut to a 7/8 length that stops above the ankle bone, with a short split at each hem so it sits easily over the foot. Jet blue navy and black are both £99. A tucked-in white shirt or a fine knit, plus a pointed flat or kitten heel, is all the styling it needs.
Patterned knits to wear with cord
The Fudge funnel neck jumper is a rich burgundy red, with a filigree floral jacquard in cerise, raspberry and orange over the shoulders and down the front. It is hip length, and the stand-up neck needs no scarf.
Two ikat cardigans share one pattern and one shape. Each buttons up to a crew neck, so it wears as a jumper when fastened. On the charcoal version, a band of cobalt, pink, orange and black crosses the yoke and sleeves, with large grey buttons. The fudge and pink version is warm beige, with pink geometric flowers set between fine brown stripes.
Worn with the black Audrey, the band of cobalt on the charcoal cardigan picks out the blue. The mulberry roll neck picks up the saddle brown. It is a textured bouclé striped in mulberry pink, rust, charcoal, oatmeal and brown, cut longer to below the hip, with side splits.

Shirts, jackets and lighter layers
Heather Cream is an ivory, relaxed crew neck with elbow-length sleeves and exposed seam detail along the arms, so a long-sleeved top underneath still shows. The navy crew neck is Breton-style, striped in navy and cream, with a red outline heart stitched on the chest.
Two lighter tops sit alongside. The Violet Ice shirt is pale pink with fine orange and white pinstripes, which turn horizontal in panels set into each side. Cedar, the other, carries an abstract print in hot pink, orange and olive on black, with drawstring ruching up one side.
For an outer layer, the Cherry Lacquer jacket is cut like a jean jacket in glossy deep red faux leather, with a shirt collar and snap buttons. It finishes at the waist, just above where the Stellar trousers sit. The After Midnight denim waistcoat is dark indigo, with a buckled half-belt across the back.

Are women's cord trousers warm enough for autumn and winter?
Cord is one of the warmer trouser fabrics for its weight. The raised ribs, called wales, give the surface more depth than a flat weave, so it feels warmer against the leg and holds up well in cold, dry weather. For the coldest days, cord works over thin tights or thermal leggings, and a full-length leg with a boot keeps the ankle covered. Both the Audrey and the Stellar from Tribal are full length.
What is the difference between slim leg and wide leg cord trousers?
A slim leg follows the line of the leg to the ankle, so it shows the shoe and tucks neatly over or into an ankle boot. It suits a longer jumper or a tucked-in knit. A wide leg hangs straight from the hip and covers most of the shoe, so a heel keeps the hem clear of the ground. High-waisted wide legs, like the Tribal Stellar, look best with the top tucked in so the waist shows.
What is fine-wale corduroy?
Wale is the name for the raised ribs that run down corduroy. Fine-wale cord has narrow, closely spaced ribs, which gives it a smoother surface, a softer sheen and less bulk than wide-wale cord. It reads a little smarter, so it works for casual office days as well as weekends. The Tribal Audrey trousers are made in fine-wale cord, and the Stellar has a softer, velvety finish.
What colours go with brown cord trousers?
Brown cord sits well with warm, earthy colours. Oatmeal, cream and camel are the easy options, and rust, burgundy and mustard add depth. For contrast, try pale pink or a soft blue.
